The effect by which one accidently stumbles upon something truly wonderful, while looking for something entirely unrelated.

Bonnie Hubbard fondly remembers her grandmother’s love for antiques, which instilled in her a lifelong passion for collecting treasures from the past. Hubbard moved to Arizona at the age of 6 from St. Louis. She grew up in the West Valley and attended Arizona State University.

In her freshman year, she met Bob Hubbard, who was on sabbatical at the university. It was love at first sight and the couple will celebrate their 44th wedding anniversary this year. They were in education for many years. Bonnie was a third-grade teacher for the Glendale Elementary School District and Bob taught philosophy at Glendale Community College for 42 years.

The Hubbards share a love for antiquing. After retiring from education, they began an antique business with a small vendor space at A Mad Hatter’s, which was a long-time antique store in downtown Glendale. They credit Ray Ralls, the owner of Mad Hatter’s, for being a mentor and starting them on the path to open their own shop.

The Hubbards opened Zola Bell’s Vintage April 1, 2008, in a two-story building built in 1919. The massive 4,600-square-foot shop is filled with vintage, pop culture, antiques, primitive and collectibles. Bonnie said visiting the shop is a special experience. She said it’s a feeling of serendipity when you see something you haven’t seen before or you are reminded of something from your past. Bonnie takes great pride in caring for all the items that go into the shop. She said the shop for her is part museum and part adoption agency. She said she wants to find a perfect home for every item.

Saturdays are a popular day at the shop. Bob is in the store every Saturday and often plays music from his extensive collection of LP records. He has a worldwide following for his knowledge and rare LP finds. However, the star attraction on Saturdays is Charlie, the Hubbards’ 10-year old chocolate Labrador.

The Hubbards’ daughter brought Charlie home from a rescue facility. Visitors line up to visit with Charlie and can often be seen sitting on the floor petting the huggable and lovable store greeter. Charlie loves going for walks around Murphy Park and throughout the downtown to visit the other shops.

The Hubbards said their business neighbors have become friends and they all enjoy helping each other. Bob said he enjoys being part of a unified Old Towne and Catlin Court community who all work together. Bonnie said her business neighbors are an inspiration.

When visiting Zola Bell’s Vintage, be sure to give yourself lots of time to explore and experience every corner of the shop. Bonnie said everyone who goes in is happy and not in a hurry. She said over the years, customers have become like family and they enjoy sharing stories. She said it’s also exciting to see the younger generation visiting the shop and discovering items for the very first time.

Popular items for the younger generation include vintage cameras and typewriters.

Stop by soon to meet Bob and Bonnie Hubbard and be sure to say hello to Charlie. Wishing you a serendipitous shopping experience at Zola Bells’ Vintage.
