Revenues grow by 2,137% over 4 years

A Glendale window manufacturer has reached a milestone that some might call the impossible dream. Avanti Industries has gone from a start in 2014 with five employees to No. 212 on Inc. magazine’s 500 top companies in the U.S. with 266 employees in 2018.

Over the past four and a half years, Avanti President and CEO Dustin Petty said his family-owned company has experienced an increase in revenues of 2,137 percent.

“It’s been a rocket ship, that’s for sure,” Petty said.

Just 11 years ago, Petty graduated with a construction degree from the Del E. Webb School of Construction at Arizona State University. But, the degree did not send his career skyrocketing. The recession was beginning and no builder jobs were available.

Petty’s construction skills were set aside for a period of time as he worked for his father in a motorcycle manufacturing company, Saxon Motorcycles, in Casa Grande. Within two years, Petty became a production manager in the business of limited option choppers.

“It was my first taste of managing a production facility,” Petty said.

He slowly migrated to a position in a building product company, helping manage another window manufacturer. He received his contractor’s license, mainly in window manufacturing, and from that point, his family’s business future changed dramatically.

“We collectively got together in 2013,” Petty said.

The “we” referred to his wife, Ondrea, father, mother, uncle, cousin and father-in-law. Avanti 1 was a window distributorship started by Petty’s father, Jerry, in 1985 in Phoenix. In his company’s biography on the Inc. 500 website, the family operation “quickly grew to a large company known for exceptional customer relations.” It was acquired by the JELD-WEN family of companies in 1996.

Petty refers to the present Avanti Industries as Avanti 2, complete with his family members. Forward to 2014, when the company opened in Glendale. This time, however, it was more than a distributorship. It was a complete operation — a manufacturer, distributor and installation company of vinyl windows and patio doors. In the process, Petty said, the company depended on past good customers and providing them with “a level of service they were looking for; do it with quality and the way we deliver.”

By doing that, Petty said, his family could control its destiny.

“Control what you sell, the whole process, start to finish, we can deliver an unparalleled customer service,” he said. “That’s a dynamic our customers love. In our case, if they’ve got an issue, they pick up the phone and call us. It’s that simple for us.”

Petty said Avanti has 45 percent of all big builders in the Valley and continues to grow. Avanti provides windows for Lennar, KB Home, DR Horton, Maracay, Beazer, Taylor Morrison and Richmond American.

“Now we’re established with a level of service, customer needs, no excuses … We’re the one trade (where) they don’t have to get involved,” Petty said.

Avanti also has satellite operations for distribution and installation in Tucson and Las Vegas. At this point, Avanti produces 1,100 windows a day and Petty said that continues to grow.

“We think 1,500 a day is definitely in our sights,” Petty said. “As a team, it’s our goal to get there. We have the equipment on line right now that enables us to get that capacity.”

Part of Avanti’s A-Team is Ralph Jordan, vice president for manufacturing and engineering, Petty said.

“He’s constantly developing along the product line, working to streamline the evolution of always improving, but the opportunity for improvement never goes away,” Petty said.

To that goal of always improving and growing, Petty said Avanti has re-invested just over $4 million back into the business. He said the past year, Avanti has recorded more than $40 million in annual revenue. In 2014, that number was $9 million.

“Whether making a window or training people, we’re constantly evaluating how we do things,” he said.

It might be as simple as not making enough windows that day. Whatever it is, he said he and his team reflect and focus on how they can make their products better.

“You do it one day at a time, correct mistakes and move the process forward,” Petty said. “Clearly, Avanti today is better than Avanti four years ago, and next month, we’ll be better than we are today. Customers think we’re swell, but we’re not excellent, but we’ve got the team to reach excellence.”

On the company’s conference room table sits a glass award from the national organization Window and Door Dealer Alliance. It is the Excellence in Installation Award — 2018 Dealer of the Year. It is recognition of the AIM, Avanti Install Method, a significant step in improving vinyl clad window installation.

“We’re trying to change the ways things are done,” Petty said.

Like many industries, Avanti has employees who leave from time to time. Petty said even if an individual applies for a job with Avanti, has no experience, but is open to hard work and growth, he or she will eventually be taking home $30 per hour.

“We teach them how to grow and we’re really proud of that,” Petty said. “We build them into craftsmen and pay wages they’re proud of and can live on. We’re nothing without people who work here. I can’t make 1,100 windows a day. We went around in meetings in this industry, heard complaints from businesses about ‘not enough people.’ You have to treat your guy better than the guy next door.”

Originally named to the Inc. magazine 5,000 fastest-growing companies, it became apparent Avanti made the top 5 percent of that number and it made the Inc. 500 list.

“It’s a cool recognition of what we’ve done here over the years,” Petty said.

When Avanti started in 2014, it occupied 40,000 square feet. It is now 112,000 square feet and picking up an additional 50,000.

“So, 162,000 square feet right here in Glendale,” Petty said, “and it’s exciting.”

Looking down at the air-conditioned plant floor from a large second-story window, Petty remarked, “There are a lot of women in our plant in a lot of critical roles. Anybody willing to come and work hard, we can find a productive job for them. We have a dedicated staff to show them what opportunities there are and how to get started.”
