Linda Miller pins the badge on her husband, Art Miller, following his swearing-in ceremony Sept. 4 as the city’s new police chief. Presiding Municipal Judge George Anagnost swore Miller in during the regular meeting of Peoria City Council.

People drove from far and wide to witness firsthand the  swearing-in of Peoria’s newest Police Chief Arthur Miller. Family, friends and officers he served with in Los Angeles and South Pasadena flew, and in one instance, drove the interstate to congratulate Miller on his new position.

City Council first had to approve City Manager Jeff Tyne’s recommendation of Miller, which was accomplished quickly. Then, Presiding Municipal Judge George  Anagnost conducted the swearing-in ceremony, with Miller’s wife, Linda, at his side.

Mayor Cathy Carlat took the badge to Linda Miller, who pinned it on her husband. The couple hugged, then faced the cheering audience.

The act of loyalty and friendship did not go unnoticed by Miller. He did not individually recognize those who had traveled quite a distance to attend the ceremony. They were not mentioned by name by Miller, but rather by association during his brief address.

He pointed to the crowd and noted friends from his neighborhood in South Pasadena and north Peoria, his brothers, Richard and Rudy, his son, Rick, and wife, Linda.

Miller then told the audience, “First, I want a chance to get to know you all. Second, I want to serve our public the best way I can. I’m committed to the community.

“It’s quite an honor to see the progression. To council, we will continue to be a progressive police department. I’m looking forward to the future. Thank you so much.”

A brief recess was called to give Miller a chance to visit with his former colleagues and neighbors. Soon, it was back to City Council business.

Miller did not leave until the final agenda item was decided and council comments made.
